We are kicking off the new year with important information about Health Technology Assessment (HTA) and an exciting opportunity for our community to get involved in shaping the future of healthcare in Europe. First opportunity is already due on January 15.
What is Health Technology Assessment (HTA)?
HTA is a systematic process used to evaluate the clinical effectiveness, cost-effectiveness, and broader impact of health technologies. These technologies include medications, medical devices, diagnostic tools, and various treatments used in healthcare. HTA also considers the social, economic, and ethical implications of new technologies. The goal of HTA is to provide evidence-based information to help policymakers, healthcare providers, and patients make informed decisions about the use of these technologies.
This ensures that healthcare systems adopt the most effective and valuable treatments, ultimately benefiting patients.
Changes in HTA Coming in 2025
The new EU HTA Regulation, effective from January 12 2025, will bring significant changes aimed at harmonising HTA processes across Member States. These changes include:
- Faster and coordinated assessments across Europe
- Greater transparency in the assessment process
- More input from patients and experts
- Consistent methods across Europe
- Reduced duplication of effort
For patients, these changes mean faster access to treatments, enhanced fairness in assessments, and a central role for patients in the assessment process.
Call for Ambassadors as Patient Experts
We encourage our Ambassadors to consider this opportunity and to be part of the EU HTA process. FH Europe Foundation will be actively participating and will contact some of our ambassadors directly. However, we also welcome interest from our whole community as this is a great opportunity.
