FH AWARENESS DAY 2025 — A HISTORIC MILESTONE

24 September is #FHAwarenessDay, and this year marks a special milestone, as we celebrate 10 years of progress, partnerships, and powerful advocacy in the fight against unaware, untested and unmanaged familial hypercholesterolaemia (FH) and premature cardiovascular disease (CVD).

10 REASONS WHY THIS YEAR IS SO SPECIAL

1️⃣ 10 Years of Community Building
FH Europe was founded a decade ago, uniting patients, clinicians, and advocates into one strong voice. Learn more [3].

2️⃣ 10 Years of Science & Data
The EAS FHSC global registry, which also marks its 10th anniversary, has transformed how FH is understood and treated. Explore the registry [4].

3️⃣ New Therapies & Updated Guidelines
In the past decade, science has moved fast, with new therapies and international guidelOver the past decade, science has advanced rapidly,
with new therapies and international guidelines making FH management more effective than ever before. We look forward with great interest to the 2025 EAS/ESC guidelines, which will no doubt mark another important step forward.

4️⃣ Global Recognition
The 2020 Call to Action in _JAMA_ helped establish FH as a serious public health challenge. View publication [5]

5️⃣ High-level European Advocacy
From the European Commission’s recognition of FH paediatric screening (2021), followed by the Slovenian (2022) & Czech (2023) EU Presidencies to the Prague Declaration [6], and the upcoming event at the European Parliament (September 25th), FH Europe Foundation has consistently put FH screening on the political agenda.

6️⃣ Building Powerful Alliances
FH Europe Foundation collaborates closely with the European Atherosclerosis Society (EAS [7]), the International Atherosclerosis
Society (IAS [8]), the World Heart Federation (WHF [9]), the European Patients Forum (EPF) [10], and EURORDIS [11]-Rare Disease Europe.

7️⃣ Breakthrough Research
The launch of FH EARLY [12] this year, alongside projects like PERFECTO [13] and PerMed FH [14], is paving the way for earlier, faster, cheaper, and more personalised FH detection and treatment.

8️⃣ Focus on Lp(a) and Rare FH
The first Global Lp(a) Summit [15] with the Brussels International Declaration on Lp(a) Testing and Management [16], alongside the new HoFH Awareness Day [17] (4 May 2024), has brought urgent attention to high-risk patients.

9️⃣ Policy Momentum
The Hungarian Council Conclusions (2024) [18] recognised FH and elevated Lp(a) as CVD risk factors, and now, in 2025, the European Commission’s CVH plan and the UN Resolution on NCDs are new opportunities to push FH higher on the agenda.

🔟 Growing Patient Voices
With the first in-person Patient Ambassadors training in Cyprus [19], lived experience is driving change like never before.

WHY IT MATTERS

Despite these achievements, awareness remains low, detection rates are under 20%, and many patients still lack access to optimal treatment. FH Awareness Day is a chance to change that.
